1 An eye for an eye: on ne peut s'empêcher de penser à la loi du Tallion et Springsteen, visiblement parfois mal compris, fait une précision nécessaire lors de son passage à Atlantic City le 7 mars 2003:
´Thank you....wrote that song....(?)....I wrote that song, that was the last song I wrote, I think, for ´The Rising´....I was looking for a cover and.....a fella that was coming up with some ideas sent me over a....just a picture of an empty sky...and uh, thought it was an important metaphor but there´s, uh....there´s one thing that always bothers me a little bit, occasionally when I play that song, I hear some applause for, for a line, uh....´I want an eye for an eye´....and uh, as a songwriter, you always write to be understood....and I wrote that phrase as an expression of the....character´s anger and, and confusion and grief and it was never written to be a....call for blind revenge or bloodlust (cheers)....so, I just thought given, given the times we live in, you can´t be too clear about these kinds of things these days and uh....and I realise that it could´ve been a well-meaning few or perhaps borderline (?), borderline psychotics out there who may have misunderstood.....but uh....living in a time when there´s real lives on the line and there´s enough destructive posing going on out there as it is, I wanted to make sure that that line was clearly understood so (?)....”
Merci….J’ai écrit cette chanson….j’ai écrit cette chanson qui était la dernière que j’ai faite je crois, pour « The Rising »….Je cherchais une pochette et…un pote qui se pointait avec quelques idées m’a envoyé une pochette sur…juste une photo d’un ciel vide…et heu, c’était une excellente métaphore mais il y a , heu…il y a une chose qui me fait tout le temps suer un petit peu, de temps en temps quand je joue une chanson, j’entends des applaudissements pour une ligne, heu…Je veux un œil pour un œil…et heu, en tant qu’auteur, vous écrivez toujours pour être compris….et j’ai écrit cette phrase comme l’expression de…la colère d’un personnage, de sa confusion, de son chagrin et ça n’a jamais été écrit pour être…un appel à une revanche aveugle ou une soif de sang (rires)….donc, c’est juste une proposition de réflexion, réflexion sur les temps dans lesquels nous vivons, de nos jours vous ne pouvez pas avoir les idées complètement claires sur ces sujets et heu…et je réalise que quelques bien pensants ou peut être des limite psychotiques ci et là pourraient s’être fourvoyés( ?)… mais heu…comme nous vivons à une époque où il y a des vraies vies en jeu et où il y a assez d’idées destructrices comme ça dans le monde, je veux être certain que cette ligne a été bien comprise, donc ( ?)….
Empty Sky est la dernière chanson écrite pour l'album. Elle a été inspirée à Springsteen, habitué à voir les tours de sa voiture, une photo de ciel vide envoyée par son directeur artistique.
