The Hitter
Bruce Springsteen
Come to the door, Ma, and unlock the chain Well I was just passin' through and got caught in the rain There's nothin' I want, nothin' that you need say Just let me lie down for a while and then I'll be on my way I was no more than a kid when you put me on the Southern Queen With the police on my back I fled to New Orleans Well I fought in the dockyards and with the money that I made And the fight was my home and any blood was my trade Baton Rouge, Ponchatoula, and LaFayette town Well they paid me the moon, Ma, to knock the men down Well I did what I did, yeah it come easily For as you know Ma, restraint and mercy were always strangers to me I fought champion Jack Thompson in a field full of mud Rain poured through the tent to the canvas and mixed with our blood In the twelfth, slipped my tongue over my broken jaw And I pounded his body into the floor Well the bell rang and rang and still I kept on 'Til I felt my glove leather slip 'tween his skin and bone And the women and the money came fast, in the days I lost track The women red, the money green, but the numbers were black I fought for the men in their silk suits to lay down their bets Well I took my good share, Ma, and I have no regret I took the fixed staid hombre with Big Diamond Don Well from high in the rafters I watched myself fall So he raised his arms, stomach twisted, and the sky it went black I stuffed my bag with their good money, Ma, and I never looked back Understand me, and Ma, every man plays the game Well if you know anyone different, then speak out his name Well Ma, if my face, now you don't recognize And just open the door and look into your dark eyes I ask of you nothin', not a kiss, not a smile Just open the door and let me lie down for a while Now the grey rain is fallin' and my ring fighting's done So in the work fields and alleys, I take them who'll come If you're a better man than me then just step to the line Show me your money and speak out your crime There's nothin' I want, Ma, nothin' that you need say Just let me lie down for a while and then I'll be on my way Well tonight in the stockyard, a man draws a circle in the dirt I move to the centre and I take off my shirt I study him for the cuts, the scars, the pain no time can erase I move hard to the left and I strike to the face | Viens à la porte m’man, et enlève la chaînette Je passais juste par là et j’ai été surpris par la pluie Je ne veux rien, tu n’auras pas besoin de parler Laisse-moi juste m’étendre un instant et ensuite je reprendrai mon chemin Je n’étais encore qu’un gamin quand tu m’as mis sur la Southern Queen Avec la police sur les talons j’ai fui à la Nouvelle Orléans Et j’ai combattu sur les docks et avec l’argent que je me suis fait Le combat c’était mon salut, et n’importe quel sang faisait l’affaire Bâton Rouge, Ponchatoula, et LaFayette Ils m’ont donné la lune, M’man pour envoyer les mecs au tapis J’ai fait ce que j’avais à faire, ouais ça venait facilement Autant que tu saches maman, les conventions et la pitié m’ont toujours été étrangères J’ai combattu le champion Jack Thompson sur un terrain plein de boue La pluie coulait sur le tapis à travers le chapiteau et se mêlait à notre sang A la douzième, je passais ma langue sur ma mâchoire brisée Et j’ai envoyé sa carcasse au tapis Et la cloche sonnait sonnait et je continuais toujours Jusqu’à ce que je sente le cuir de mon gant glisser entre sa chair et son os Alors les filles et l’argent ont vite suivi, au moment où j’ai perdu les pédales Il y avait les filles rousses, l’argent vert, mais les chiffres étaient noirs Je combattais pour les hommes en costumes de soie pour qu’ils allongent leurs paris J’en ai pris ma bonne part, M’man et je ne regrette rien J’ai trouvé mon maître avec Big Diamond Don Et du haut des cintres, je me suis vu tomber Alors il a levé ses bras, mon estomac s’est mis en vrille, et le ciel est devenu noir J’ai bourré mon sac avec leur bon argent, M’man, et n’ai jamais regardé en arrière Comprends moi, et M’man, chaque homme joue le jeu Si tu connais quelqu’un de différent, alors donne-moi son nom Bien M’man, maintenant si tu ne reconnais pas mon visage, Que tu ouvres juste la porte et que je regarde dans tes yeux sombres Je ne te demande rien, pas un baiser, pas un sourire Ouvres juste la porte et laisse-moi m’allonger un instant Maintenant la pluie grise tombe et mon combat de ring est fini Alors par les champs et les ruelles, je prends ceux qui se présenteront Si tu es un gars meilleur que moi, alors fais le pas Montre-moi ton argent et expie ton crime Je ne veux rien, M’man, rien que tu n’aies à dire Laisse-moi juste m’étendre un instant et ensuite je reprendrai mon chemin Ce soir sur le parc à bestiaux, un homme trace un cercle dans la poussière Je m’avance au centre et ôte ma chemise J’étudie ses entailles, ses cicatrices, la douleur que le temps ne peut effacer Je m’esquive vivement sur la gauche et frappe au visage |
