La première apparition connue de cette chanson est dans l’ouvrage "Complaynt of Scotland" de Wedderburn (1548) sous le nom de "The frog came to the myl dur". La plus ancienne version musicale date de 1611 dans le "Melismata - Musical Phansies" de Thomas Ravenscroft sous le titre "A Most Strange Weddinge of the Froge and the Mouse.". Les pères pèlerins amenèrent vraisemblablement la chanson aux Etats-Unis, où elle migra dans la région du Blue Ridge et du sud des Appalaches.
La chanson a été rerise par de très nombreux artistes, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Nick Cave, Mike Oldfield, et en français pas Claude François sous le titre "Monsieur Crapaud".
