Les deux chansons abordent le même thème, cependant dans Shut Out the Light, on pressent le retour du Vietnam de Johnson Leiner comme un événement plutôt heureux, même s’il semble déboussolé. Dans Gypsy Biker, les amis de Gypsy Biker sortent sa machine, mais on comprend que c’est une tragédie qui se joue.
Cette chanson fut enregistrée entre la mi-janvier et la mi-février 1983 au Thrill Hill West. Une des versions contenait une partie violon de Soozie Tyrell qui participait alors à sa première session de travail avec Springsteen. Shut Out The Light a été également utilisée sur plusieurs faces B des singles issus de Born In The USA.
