Stan Goldstein

An incredible Thursday at "Stories From the Road" Little Steven's TeachRock event at the Stone Pony and Asbury Lanes.
One of the many highlights was seeing some incredible footage from Bruce's vault. More on that later.
Not even sure where to begin, the festivities began at 4:30 p.m. at the Stone Pony for a cocktail party. Nicki Germaine was there with her book, signing copies for attendees. Also there was tour photographers Pam Springsteen and Rob DeMartin signing copies of their photos for some of the donors.
I bought a photo from Pam that she took that was signed by her and Bruce and later was signed by Steve Van Zandt. All proceeds were donated to schools in Asbury Park.
E Street Band members Roy Bittan and Garry Tallent were at the Pony along with Jake Clemons, Anthony Almonte, Curtis King and Ozzie Melendez. They were all gracious to pose for photos.
A little bragging story. I asked Jake if I could get a photo with him and Thom Zimny and I said to Jake, "Hi, I'm Stan." And Jake said: "I know who you are, Stan Goldstein." Oh that just floored me. OK, ego trip over.
The festivities then moved to Asbury Lanes for the main event.
There Steve Van Zandt joined for the evening and Brian Williams was the emcee.
They locked the phones up so no pictures were allowed.
There were talks about TeachRock and how it is incorporated in the curriculum in schools. Three Asbury Park teachers were honored.
There was a photographers roundtable with Nicki Germaine, Pam Springsteen and Rob DeMartin. That was followed by a roundtable with Curtis King, Jake Clemons and Anthony Almonte. Did you know that it's Curtis King's voice on the Popeye's commercials? "Love that chicken at Popeyes" is Curtis singing, Brian Williams pointed out.
Then the highlight of the evening, Thom Zimny showed clips from Bruce's vault that were in two words, "Totally awesome!!!" I don't believe these clips were ever publicly seen before. Thom was joined by Garry Tallent, Steve and Roy Bittan in this round table.
The first clip we saw was from Westbury, Long Island, in 1975 It was color footage of Bruce singing "Spirit in the Night." There are no words to describe how good this is. Bruce is all over the stage, dancing and jumping around. Steve talked about how Bruce was very introverted and when he got on stage he was this totally different person.
Next up was another color clip, this from one of the 1975 Bottom Line shows and Bruce and the band doing "Kitty's Back." Again, Bruce is just climbing onto tables, up poles. Incredible.
I may have the order of these mixed up in the way we saw them.
There was a black and white clip from Nassau Community College in 1973 of Bruce and the band with Vini Lopez and David Sancious doing "Walking the Dog": with special guest Southside Johnny on the harmonica. Steve said, "How did Southside get there? He must have taken a bus."
There was a black and white clip of Bruce doing an early version of "Jungleland" from the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park in 1974. This may have been the show he opened for Anne Murray.
Another clip was a color "Detroit Medley" from the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, on New Year's Eve, 1975. There also was a clip of Bruce rehearsing with the band at his Holmdel house in 1976 doing "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out." The final clip was of Bruce and Clarence, during rehearsals for the 1980 River tour, working on "Fire" when Clarence does the "But your heart stays cool" part.
We all were given a gift box, mine contained a Pam Springsteen signed photo that is included with the pictures I posted.
Good to see so many friends and Spring-nuts including Howie Chaz and Jewishjulie Sokol Chaz (winning my best dressed award) as well as Lauren Stephanie and many others.
It was a special/day night and most importantly, a lot of money was raised for TeachRock.
Now to finish the trifecta, another show in Philadelphia on Friday."

Quelques détails de plus par le podcast None But The Brave.

1975 Westbury Music Festival - Spirit In The Night

One camera shoot but extremely watchable with good sound. This was the first clip Thom showed and jaws were dropping around the room, including Steve’s. As soon as it ended, he exclaimed “holy shit!”

1975 Bottom Line - Kitty’s Back

Also one camera, not as high quality as Spirit, and the sound was certainly listenable. That being said, this was some of the most remarkable footage of Bruce I’ve ever seen. No guitar, climbing onto the tables, storming around the stage. Obviously a lot was riding on those shows and it is complete evident in his performance.

1974 Schaefer Muisc Fest - Jungleland

A very early version of Jungleland shot by Barry Rebo in black and white. The video quality was extremely low on this one, also the audio but it’s watchable. Amazing footage of Jungleland when it still had the jazz break and the sequence of the verses was different from what we know now.

1980 River rehearsals - Fire

The band working on the middle break of Fire, with Bruce and Clarence figuring out their parts. Great to see, this was shown he said as a tribute to Clarence. The quality was excellent.

1976 Bruce’s house - 10th Ave.

The band plays a version of 10th Ave with the horns that was cool to see but less historically notable than the videos above, especially since 10th Ave. has been played in the exact same arrangement for 50 years except for the Tower ‘75 performances.

1973 Nassau Community College - Walking The Dog

Multi-camera, black & white footage. Southside is onstage playing harmonica. Very interesting to see the earliest version of the E Street Band, highly influenced by Davey Sancious. Very jazzy. Steve at the end of that clip said “what the hell was Southside doing there?”

December 31, 1975 Tower Theater - Detroit Medley

Incredible footage of the Band doing the Medley and Bruce pulling someone out of the crowd with a watch to countdown to midnight.

From what Zimney said, it sounds like these shows exist in bits & pieces. Most of the clips above were not from start to finish. IIRC only 10th Ave was complete.
