Un petit compte-rendu. Vini Mad Dog, David Sancious et Garry Tallent sur une même scène, ce devait être sympa.

'Fun day at the symposium for the 50th anniversary of "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." at Monmouth University today. The major highlight of the day was a panel hosted by Bob Santelli with Mike Appel, Vini Lopez, Garry Tallent and David Sancious talking about the making of the album. This was only 45 minutes and should have been 90 minutes, if not more. To hear the stories from all of them about the album was such a treat. They recorded it in about four days. David Sancious had some great stories as did Vini. One funny story was them telling about reading the lyrics to "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street" and they didn't realize that was the name of the song, even after recording it. They thought it was "Hey Bus Driver."
David and Garry talked about how they were both in Richmond, Virginia, when they got the call from Bruce that he had signed a record deal and wanted them on the album. David said they were in Richmond because "we had worn out our welcome at the Jersey Shore because we wouldn't play covers." Vini said he was working on a fishing boat in Point Pleasant Beach when he got the call.
I thought there might be a good chance that Bruce would show up for this panel, but apparently he was in, or just got back from Cabo San Lucas. So no Bruce today.
David talked about one flight he was sitting next to Bruce, there was a lot of lightning (like one of the "Twilight Zone" episodes) and everyone was really scared. They called it the "Flight to Doom" and they started taking trains after that.
Mike Appel really paid tribute to David, just saying how talented he was. Mike sometimes went off on tangents that didn't seem to go anywhere at times (he did that in the first panel of the day) but everyone around me was frustrated that this wasn't longer. Although in all fairness it was only scheduled for 45 minutes.
The other major highlight was at the end of the day, having all the songs off the album performed live by different performers with the final two songs "Bus Stop" and "It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City" with David, Vini and Garry. Local singer Pat Roddy did the lead vocals. To see the only three living original E Street Band members outside of Bruce together performing these was just magical. I posted the day's schedule so you can see each session. Also the list of who performed each song.
Some quick hits on the other sessions.
The day began with a short new interview with Bruce about Greetings. Some nice stories from Bruce about the album. I took a picture, he's wearing a Boston College cap.
The first session, "Setting the Scene," was moderated by our own Tom Cunningham. I felt bad for Tom as at first Peter Knobler spoke too long, then Mike Appel, while he has great stories, just goes off on these side stories and doesn't stop. Before you knew it, they were out of time. There were too many panelist and Mike Appel probably should have had his own session.
The Story Behind the Photographs: Some great photos by Peter Cunningham who has lots of 1973-1975 photos of Bruce including those from the Bottom Line. I had never seen many of these great photos before.
A Conversation with Nicki Germaine. Rich Russo interviewed Nicki who has a new book out "Springsteen: Liberty Hall" with photos of Bruce and the band's shows there in Houston in 1974. Nicki is also now Garry Tallent's girlfriend. I very much enjoyed this conversation. Nicki talked about her background as a photographer, how she came about to shoot these Liberty Hall shows. How Danny Federici was flirting with her and she also enjoyed talking with Clarence and how Bruce was pretty quiet the whole time. She said she found out later that at the time he was concerned Columbia was going to drop him. After her talk, Nicki signed copies of her book. She sold out of her allotment of I believe 75 she had there and I look forward to going through it.
After an hour break for lunch, there was a 40-minute visual presentation from two of the curators from the Springsteen archives. Connor Rupp, who is the assistant curator, is 22 I believe, but really knows his stuff about Bruce. This was enjoyable to see some of the clips and hear the audio.
The fifth session was the one with Garry, David, Mike Appel, and Vini.
Next up was a session about all the songs moderated by Eileen Chapman. I enjoyed this. Tom Cunningham was a part of this panel and it was interesting to hear everyone's take on each of the songs. And this group knew how to keep their comments short and to the point.
The final session before the music started, was about The Importance of Greetings with three Monmouth U. professors.
Overall an enjoyable day. My advice would be they don't need so many panels, and don't have five people on one panel that only goes 50 minutes when one of the panelists basically hogs it (not anyone's fault).
Also, we could have used a little bit longer breaks. And there was one Bruce fan, who many of us know and try to avoid because he is annoying, who kept yelling at some of the panelists (especially Mike Appel) to put the mic by their mouth so we could hear them. At times it was needed but this person just became annoying as he always is.
The event was sold out and I would say there were 500-plus in the theater.
The event was filmed and highlights of it are supposed to be shown on the archives website at some point.'
