Les 21 et 22 septembre, Springsteen participe aux deux concerts No Nukes au Madison Square Garden pour une organisation anti-nucléaire - M.U.S.E. - (Musicians United For Safe Energy) dans l'enceinte du Madison Square Garden à New York. En dépit de sa réticence à mêler son nom à toute cause politique, Springsteen avait fini par accepter avec quelques conditions. Le succès est énorme. Bruce est à l'affiche avec notamment Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Carly Simon et James Taylor. Jackson Brown se joint à lui pour le classique Stay de Maurice Williams. Le second soir, Bruce fête ses trente ans et joue The River pour la première fois en public.
