Ce concert eut lieu la nuit après la mort de John Lennon. Il reste à l'heure actuelle l'un des shows les plus émouvants de Springsteen. Au début de la soirée, Bruce fit un bref discours dans lequel il déclara : "Si ce concert n'était pas dédié à John Lennon, beaucoup d'entre-nous seraient ailleurs en ce moment. C'est très difficile de vivre au milieu de tant de choses insupportables. C'est aussi très dur pour nous de jouer ce soir, mais il n'y a rien d'autre à faire." Jay Cock rapporte dans un article intitulé The Last Day in the Life of John Lennon : "Springsteen et le E Street Band se sont littéralement jetés dans Born to run, montrant par là même que jouer était la meilleure chose à faire.
